Gregory Erlandson Named Editor-in-chief of Catholic News Service

WASHINGTON—Gregory R. Erlandson has been appointed director and editor-in-chief of Catholic News Service (CNS), the appointment will take effect September 12.

Erlandson served as president of Our Sunday Visitor Publishing (OSV) for 16 years. He joined OSV in 1989 as an editor, was promoted to editor-in-chief in 1991, and named president in 2000. He began his career at National Catholic Register before spending three years as a foreign correspondent for CNS’s Rome bureau.

Erlandson was appointed twice as a consultant to the USCCB Committee on Communications, and served as a consultor for the Holy See’s Pontifical Council for Social Communications. He also was a member of the Vatican Media Committee that eventually led to the creation of the Holy See’s new Secretariat for Communications.

He is a past president of the Catholic Press Association (CPA), received the St. Francis DeSales Award for outstanding contributions to Catholic journalism from the CPA and was inducted into the Association of Catholic Publishers Hall of Fame for lifetime achievement.

I am confident he will prove to be an important resource to the clients of CNS,” said Msgr. J. Brian Bransfield, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) General Secretary.

Erlandson graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in English literature, and attended U.C. Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. He will be relocating to the Washington area from Fort Wayne, Indiana.

With a staff of over 25 journalists and about a dozen stringers around the world, Catholic News Service is the oldest and largest English-language religious news organization in the world.
